SOFIA - Domino

Rather than the fast-pasted beats of most pop music, SOFIA, a Finnish singer-songwriter, takes a simple approach to her latest single ‘Domino’. Her aim with her music is to keep it soulful and organic, and this track definitely brings her personality and style to life.

Switching out electronic sounds and samples for stripped-back guitars and beats mixes the pop genre with R&B influences and really helps to focus on the vocals and lyrics. There’s nothing show-stopping about the melodies, and this works great in her favour. It continues a cool, relaxed vibe that draws you into the music.

While only being 18, her voice has a mature feel that brings out the emotions of the song. Mixing with the subtlety of the music, the vocals are clear and effortless. Her tone creates the song into a dreamy ballad, yet the difference between this track and other ballads is her hierarchy between verses and the chorus. The verses flow well into each chorus without much jump between music or tone, continuing the calming feel. It really helps to keep the emotions of the song running throughout and maintain originality.

This song keeps the mind interested with its catchy, yet calm chorus, implementing a lot of clever rhymes that get stuck in your head. You’ll be singing along by the second listen and you won’t want to stop. What keeps her music and sound so original is how simple and organic she sounds, which is a refreshing change from the majority of modern music. Her music sounds real, and that’s the best way to show creativity.
