Spiny Norman - Lady Luck - Indie Music Contest April 2020
Lady Luck consists of a unique blend of styles, that helps to depict the sense of alienation of the protagonist. Heavy minimalistic drums, muted guitars and a synthesizer-arpeggio set the enchanted scene for this intimate, introspective song. The song contains influences from jazz and synthpop among others. The subdued vocal describes the sober self-reflection that springs from the exceeding greatness of the power of love. The singer expresses the combination of ecstasy and insecurity that arises from a budding love. On the hand, the notion that an entire lifetime has merely been the build-up to this single magical moment. On the other hand, how do I process these emotions? How do I rearrange my life after this transformative experience? The serene yet anticipating musical accompaniment underlines this state of mind. That eerie sensation of the calm before the storm, or perhaps the eye of the hurricane? The bridge interrupts the charged atmosphere and opens up the song with a close harmony reminiscent of Crosby, Stills & Nash. This is the point at which all doubt has subsided, so that in the final verse the praise of love can be sung without restraint.
