Evil Edna – Isle Of Dogs

Evil Edna

London’s Evil Edna releases a new single just before the closing bell of 2018 and it’s not to be missed. Isle of Dogs wastes no time getting its cantankerous, boot stomping, anxiety-driven self, right in front of your wet nose. The track, which successfully melds punk and hootenanny is delivered to you from immediately apparent Londoners, but under the guise of Americana, Rockabilly and Chicken N’ Waffles.

Isle of Dogs captures the disobedience of youth, but also has the musicality and delivery of a fine, Broadway musical number, Murray Head kind of stuff. The writing and lyrics demand a more discriminate ear than your usual punk aficionado; Evil Edna shows a prowess for song structure and poetic prose amid its angst and mayhem .

The chord section through the bridge is a creative piece in itself. No gratuitous soloing, rather a slick build of uneasy, crumbling chords. Bratty guitar tones, warm hollow body tremolo swells and Monty Python vocals persist. You’ll also be quick to discover that Evil Edna sold its soul to the harmonica devil. No, not the big guy from the 90’s, not the blind guy from the 70s and 80s, rather the Paul Butterfield one. The kind of harp where tone is of the upmost importance. The kind where it’s just not wailing away into someone’s vocal mic. Edna’s harmonica parts add rhythm and color to the track, warmness, spring reverb, not shock and awe.

Evil Edna’s, Isle of Dogs is available wherever they sell fried chicken and mini statues of Big Ben. Thumbs up to this track and a few others I found (Full Pelt)! Might convert Southern Culture fans or even appeal to some Cake fans too – Red Velvet!
